Iran decries US call for UNSC meeting on Iranian unrests

1/7/2018 3:45 a.m. - Iran's Revolutionary Guard said Sunday the country's people and security forces had defeated unrest fomented by foreign enemies, as parliament and key security officials met to discuss the boldest challenge to the clerical establishment since 2009.

"The Iranian regime is finally on notice: The world will be watching what you do", she said.

And the third thing (which may account for the second) is that the majority of protesters this time are not middle-class students and professionals but lower-class people with very little to lose.

Russia, China, and France - three of the body's five permanent members - spoke against the US move to raise anti-government protests in Iran at a UN meeting, saying they did not pose a risk to international peace or security.

They should also warn authorities in Iran against any violent suppression of the demonstrations, whether such violence takes place on the streets or - as occurred after the 2009 protests - later on in homes and prisons, out of the public eye.

I endorse Sadjadpour's suggestions - including careful U.S. statements of solidarity that support peaceful demonstrations and helping Iranians get the technology to circumvent regime internet blackouts. As the regime weakens, there's space for a popular leader who speaks for an unhappy country.

"The enemy is always looking for an opportunity and any crevice to infiltrate and strike the Iranian nation", Khamenei said on Tuesday. It was held in solidarity with those demonstrating in Iran.

Rouhani came to power in 2013 promising to mend the economy and ease social tensions, but high living costs and unemployment have left many feeling that progress is too slow.

"One has the impression that unexplainably irrational allergy to that country has a blind-folding effect in evaluating the events there and results in wishful thinking", Nebenzya said. Check out the inimitable Carnegie Endowment fellow Karim Sadjadpour @ksadjadpour; intrepid Iranian-born journalists Maziar Bahari @maziarbahari, Farnaz Fassihi @farnazfassihi, and Borzou Daragahi @borzou; the Brookings Institution's Suzanne Maloney @MaloneySuzanne; and human-rights activist Gissou Nia @GissouNia. Hundreds of them have reportedly been stuffed into the infamous Evin prison, far exceeding the facility's ability to process new inmates.

Massive counter-demonstrations and a crackdown on dissent appear to have quelled or contained demonstrations that erupted in Iran's provincial cities and towns on December 28.

Here are six charts that help explain the hardships faced by ordinary Iranians.

"One of the issues addressed by deputies and the parliament speaker was that of detained students, and it was decided that the Intelligence Ministry would vigorously pursue this and submit a report by next week", said Nemati, quoted by IRNA.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Wednesday deplored the loss of life, saying: "Further violence must be avoided".

Tillerson himself seemed interested in doing business with Iran back in 2016, when he was CEO of oil giant Exxon.

The powerful Guard blamed the unrest on the United States, Israel and Saudi Arabia, as well as an exiled opposition group known as the Mujahedeen-e-Khalq, and supporters of the monarchy that was overthrown in the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

"Today we are witnessing how the United States is abusing the platform of the Security Council", Nebenzia stated on Friday.

The geographic and demographic scope of the protests is what makes them so remarkable - and so damaging to the long-term prospects of the regime. Since these protests began with economic demands, and demonstrators have escalated to an ultimatum of fundamental regime change.

America's antagonists on the Security Council had harsh words for why the session was even called, arguing the issue is not one of international security, but rather domestic politics.

Khatami also called on the government to "pay more attention to people's economic problems".

"Another foreign policy blunder for the (U.S. President Donald) Trump administration", Zariff tweeted.

But as tempting as that grandstanding could be, the United States should probably take no hasty actions on this one until it can give the Iranian people a chance to be fully heard.
