Fire bell in the night for the Ayatollah — Pat Buchanan

The UN Security Council held an emergency meeting at the request of the US on Friday to discuss the anti-government protests that rocked Iran last week.

The US Ambassador Nikki Haley told Tehran "the world will be watching", reiterating the US president's support for the anti-government demonstrators. The Islamist regime (which in addition to being one of the biggest state funders of terrorism is also one of the worst human rights abusers in the world) seemed on the verge of collapse. Last month, a large majority of UN members voted for a resolution denouncing the US' decision to recognise Jerusalem as Israel's capital and move the US embassy there.

Tillerson himself seemed interested in doing business with Iran back in 2016, when he was CEO of oil giant Exxon.

"If the United States are seeking reasons which have nothing to do with this accord in order to raise pressure on Iran, which is what they seem to be doing, then that is an unacceptable method and unworthy of a great power", Ryabkov was quoted as saying by Russian news agency RIA Novosti.

Perhaps the Trudeau government is taking yet another page from the former Obama administration's playbook by failing to stand with the protestors.

To begin with, their encouragement by social media provides the embattled Iranian regime with an excuse to blame the protests on foreign meddling (and with the historical intervention of the CIA and MI6, it wouldn't be totally far-fetched).

"The UNSC rebuffed the US naked attempt to hijack its mandate". After the removal of severe sanctions placed upon them due to the nations nuclear program, Iranians expected their way of life to greatly improve. "We encourage all member states to uphold all their commitments".

"The control and censorship of information through the blocking of internet and messaging services represents an unlawful restriction of the right to freedom of expression and prevents the population from accessing communication and services". He refused this past fall to certify Iran's compliance with the pact and said the benefits to Iran were disproportionate to the concessions it made.

At least 21 were killed and hundreds arrested in the biggest demonstrations in the country since 2009.

"The Iranian people are calling out, 'Think of us!'" Haley said, echoing a chant heard at some protests.

Khoshoroo alleged that the US has a long history of intervening in the internal affairs of Iran, including a continuous pattern of disruption in the democratisation process in Iran.

Those protests have petered out in recent days while pro-government rallies have gained momentum. But Western news agencies insist there were anti-government protests as recently as Friday.

Ambassador François Delattre said the international community must commit to fully implementing the nuclear agreement with Iran - which the Trump administration has refused to recertify.

The resistance in Iran doesn't face impossible odds.

The government also briefly blocked the Instagram photo-sharing site. He said such a meeting would be "harmful and destructive".

"The Iranian people are rising up in over 79 locations throughout the country", Haley said.

And Iranian hard-liners, clerical and military, are not going to permit protests demanding Western freedom and material goods, to cause them to commit what they believe would be ideological suicide.

"Cyberspace was kindling the fire of the battle", Ayatollah Ahmad Khatami told thousands of worshippers gathered in Tehran.

But countries including France, Bolivia and Russia agreed that the Security Council should not get involved in the Iranian protests. The CIA declined to comment.
