Manchester City are close to finalising a deal for Monaco left-back Benjamin Mendy, Sky sources understand.

Guardiola has already raided Monaco, who dumped City out of the Champions League last term, to snap up playmaker Bernardo Silva, while a host of other star performers from Leonardo Jardim's squad are attracting attention.

Monaco have made it clear that the club will only consider selling the 22-year-old defender for an outrageous amount of money and it seems Manchester City are intent on testing that resolve.

The official reason given is that Mendy is recovering from a right thigh injury suffered while on international duty with France.

According to Sky Sports, there's been a breakthrough in the negotiations after the Sky Blues agreed to meet Monaco's asking price.

Chelsea and Liverpool have also been interested in the Frenchman, but Manchester City are currently doing all the heavy lifting to take him to England this summer.

Mendy made 39 appearances for the French champions last season and scored one goal in all competitions.

The Sun report City are preparing a huge £50 million offer, and even that may not be enough to convince Monaco to sell the defender.

And the principality club have today announced that Mendy will miss the next stage of their pre-season campaign in Switzerland, from Thursday 13 July to Wednesday 19 July.
